Ein Phrasal Verb ist ein Verb plus ein kleines Wort mit einer neuen Bedeutung: turn on/off (eine Maschine), look for (versuchen zu finden), give up (aufhören zu versuchen), find out (eine Tatsache herausfinden) und pick up (anheben oder jemanden abholen). Bei turn on/off, give up und pick up steht ein Pronomen in der Mitte: turn it off, niemals turn off it.
Arabisch und Französisch verwenden ein einzelnes Verb (أطفئ, éteindre), weshalb sich Phrasal Verbs fremd anfühlen und Lernende das Pronomen an das Ende stellen: turn off it. Das Englische setzt kurze Pronomen wie it und them in die Mitte.
