بعد tell يأتي الشخص: tell me و tell him the truth و tell Sara a story. وبعد say يأتي الكلام لا الشخص: say hello و say something. وإذا أردت ذكر الشخص بعد say فاستعمل to: She said something to me.
نقول بالعربية «قال لي» وبالفرنسية il m'a dit، فنضع الشخص بعد الفعل مباشرة ونقول He said me. في الإنجليزية الفعل tell وحده يعمل هكذا: He told me.

بعض العبارات الثابتة تأخذ tell دون شخص: tell the truth و tell a lie و tell the time و tell a story. ومع نقل الكلام حرفيًا نستعمل say: “I'm late,” she said.
