بعد Could you tell me و Do you know نستعمل ترتيب الجملة العادية، الفاعل قبل الفعل: فيصبح Where is the station? هكذا: Could you tell me where the station is? ولأسئلة نعم أو لا نستعمل if: Do you know if the bank is open?
في السؤال المباشر يأتي الفعل قبل الفاعل، فنحتفظ بهذا الترتيب خطأً: Could you tell me where is the station. والفرنسية تقول où est la gare في الحالتين. لكن في الإنجليزية يكون الجزء الأول هو السؤال، والباقي جملة عادية.

مسافر يسأل شخصًا في الشارع عن المحطة.
A: Excuse me, could you tell me where the station is?
B: Sure. Go straight on and turn left at the bank.
A: Thanks. Do you know if there's a train to the airport tonight?
B: I think so, but check the board at the station.
اختر الجواب الصحيح. الأجوبة في آخر الدرس.
تختفي do و does و did أيضًا: What time does it start تصبح Do you know what time it starts? وتبقى علامة الاستفهام في آخر الجملة كلها.
